Singing is Good For You – Research Shows

Singing is good for you, especially singing together- research shows.

There are so many reasons why we should all be singing. Research proves how beneficial singing is for us. Science says Singing is good for us.

“The neuroscience of singing shows that when we sing our neurotransmitters connect in new and different ways. It fires up the right temporal lobe of our brain, releasing endorphins that make us smarter, healthier, happier and more creative. When we sing with other people this effect is amplified.”

Our bodies and ears are designed to be regularly tuned up by singing. Singing and music literally tune up the inner ear, just the same as when you tune up the skin of a drum. This awareness is in phrases we use unconsciously: ‘I’m just out of tune with the world’.

Those of us who sing together regularly find this. We miss it so much when we don’t do it- it is a physical thing. Singing spreads joy and a feeling of connection.

Singing A New Song

There is something so special about singing a NEW song. Something akin to discovering a new valley or secret place.

Last summer I was privileged to work on a new song, written by Andrew Roddy, a singer/song writer who lives locally to the Song House in Co. Donegal. The song is called ‘When the Ice came’. It is a powerful piece of work. This is the chorus, you get an idea of the scale:

‘I am older than the mountains and the valleys
I am older than the rivers and the streams
I am older than the language and the music
I am older than the pictures in your dreams’

We sang it with a group of singers, from beginners to experienced, who came to the Song House last summer, on a Singing on the Wild Side holiday. It proved to be their favourite song.

You can hear us singing it:
