• Learn harmony songs in Irish and in English, with Candy Verney

• Participate in the local annual Traditional Music and Culture festival / Féile na Sean Bheairice

What is Sean-Nós?

Sean-Nós singing can be traced back to the ancient and medieval Gaelic bardic tradition. Many sean-nós songs today boast a great age and a long lineage, but the tradition carries on, and new songs are being composed by contemporary singers.

Noeleen Ní Cholla’s ancestors came from various islands off Gaoth Dobhair (Gweedore), off the coast of NW Donegal. She grew up learning songs from her mother and grandmother, and will be taking us on an epic boat trip to the now uninhabited Inis Oirthir, where some of her songs originate.
Be prepared to feel the magic, listen to songs of tragedy, heartbreak & fairies. This is a unique opportunity to participate in an ancient living tradition of song from this part of Ireland.

Diane Ní Chanainn and Conor Ó Gallachóir, both winners of several highly prized competitions in ‘seán-nós’ will lead us in an evening of traditional songs at the Song House. Read more about Diane at dianecannonmusic.com

Féile na Sean Bheairice / Traditional Music and Culture Festival

This is a very special small music festival that attracts young and old from this area, and the islands around, in particular Tory Island. It includes a sean-nós singing competition, various workshops and an evening Céilí. Be prepared to hear a teenager singing in the old style, as his forebears have always done. Watch young dancers as they demonstrate sean-nós dances.
As well as singing, there will be an array of other cultural events. This promises to be a unique and fascinating weekend.

Candy Verney, from the Song House, will lead a harmony singing workshop, singing some of the old songs. She has made sensitive choral arrangements of some of the songs, so that choirs can appreciate their beauty.

Teach na nAmhrán / The Song House

This house has a rich history as a cultural venue. Formerly the Poets’ House, welcoming poets from all over Ireland and USA, it was converted in to a house of song 5 years ago by Candy Verney, who over 25 years has enabled thousands to find their voice through community choirs. It now is a simple and comfortable and aesthetic residential centre, with a beautiful organic garden: a place to reconnect with the essentials of life.
