Carolling with Candy and friends Workshop #1
November 28 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
€10 – €25
With Candy Verney and Lindsey Williams
Fed up with Covid? We can still sing together! Come join us to celebrate the festive season:
- Unusual and forgotten carols from around Ireland, the UK and other parts of the world
- Easy Winter rounds
- Learn one or two harmony parts
What songs will we sing?
We’ll explore some fascinating and unusual carols from diverse traditions, with some background history thrown in. In 17th Century UK, the puritans banned singing in churches, so the people went to sing in the pubs. This tradition still goes on to this day. Often using the words we know, the songs are wonderful fresh, fun to sing, very seasonal but not religious. There are also many beautiful medieval carols. Each session with include 2 unusual carols, one well known one, and winter rounds. Expect a wonderful festive feast!

Meet your hosts
Candy Verney
Candy’s passion is to inspire and create, through singing, a sense of harmony which gives an experience beyond the ordinary. She has been building singing communities in different ways all her working life. She created and developed 6 community choirs in and around Bath for 20 years. She runs Community Choir Leader Trainings, seeding singing groups throughout UK and Germany. She initiated and directed The Trowbridge Song project, celebrating diversity through sharing traditional music, in a rural town in Wiltshire. She is now director of The Song House, a retreat centre in Co. Donegal, NW Ireland, where she also runs singing holidays and trainings. Recently she has collaborated with Lindsey Williams and together they have written a series of songs for choirs that are a joy to sing, whose lyrics inspire and comment on modern life: Songs for Life
Lindsey Williams
Lindsey is an award-winning playwright who has been writing songs all her life. A Clinical Psychologist by profession, she tries to write songs that reflect and dissect everyday experiences. She says ‘I write lyrics that have meaning for me but which I also hope will resonate with other people…The tunes usually come pretty easily but getting the words right is hell!’
Lindsey is Assistant Music Director with Sing Out Bristol (the South West’s largest LGBT choir) and leads the Spring Singers in Gloucestershire, a group she describes as ‘small on numbers but huge on loveliness!’
Collaborating with Candy has been thrilling…by some magical alchemy she creates marvelous, soaring, rhythmic harmonies that singers just love to sing.
‘Candy and Lindsey…Wow! The tunes, the harmonies, the words, the teaching…And all done with such good humour and laughter. To quote my favourite song of the day…’I’ll be coming back to you!’ AN 2017
