Exploring our experiences of womanhood through song, ceremony and sharing our stories
15th – 18th September 2022
With Joanie Bones
Joanie will be sharing songs from her project THE SHAME // THE LIGHT and other women’s songs, holding space so that together we can give voice to our experiences and creating beautiful ceremony to help us on our way through our lives as women. Expect some tears and much belly laughter as we finally get to put aside generations of separation and come together to share our depths and light with each other.
Joanie’s current interest in writing women’s songs arose when she noticed that many women in her life were feeling lost and isolated around their experiences of menopause. Knowing that miracles so often happen when women come together to share their experiences, Joanie started to host online listening circles for women of all ages to share their experiences of the menopause, and for women not yet at that threshold to start to learn about it. These were such rich learning and healing experiences she followed these with circles on other themes of womanhood. Always looking for songs to bear light on any issue, she was stunned to discover there are hardly any songs about so many of the issues women face; the menopause, not having children, the experiences of mothering, aging, etc etc. The songs she will be sharing on this weekend come from the work she has been doing to root out the songs that do exist, and write the ones that don’t.
There is a discount available for those on our online women’s circle ‘Circles of Light’ which Joanie is also leading. Read more: https://thesonghouseireland.com/event/circles-of-light/
Joanie Bones
Joanie has studied women’s story and song traditions for many years and has supported hundreds of women through the life-transition of pregnancy and birth. She has trained as a birth educator, midwife, shamanic practitioner, circle facilitator, and is currently studying ancestral song and story lines with Leah Song from Rising Appalachia.
With a background spanning a deep love of folk song of the British Isles, teenage years spent immersed in 90s Britpop London, decades of spiritual searching, a deep love for devotional music from the East and her daily life as a Persian/Jewish Londoner living in the remote Scottish Highlands, Joanie Bones gathers the fragments of cultures, lands and songs into a music of soul, spirit and connection.
Mentored by four-time winner of the Scots Singer of the Year Award Siobhan Miller, Joanie is committed to using song as a power for exploring meaning and creating unity. She has sung everywhere – at births, on boats, at festivals, at folk clubs, sit-ins, lock-ins and die-ins – always encouraging people to join their voices together in song and clearing the way with her deep, resonant voice, reminiscent of June Tabor.
