History of the Song House

The Song House building has an exciting creative history…

Originally named The Poets’ House by celebrated poets Jimmy and Janice Simmons in 1990, it became a centre of literary activity for over 15 years and a well-known gathering place for writers, poets and lovers of the arts to hone and share their crafts.

Many famous poets from around Ireland, America and the UK—including Seamus Heaney—would gather and teach here, within these walls.

In 2014 the house was bought by Candy Verney. Together with her husband Robin Botley, they lovingly restored the house with eco-friendly principals in mind, and designed and developed the beautiful organic garden.

The name Song House reflects Candy’s musical work. She developed choral groups and events here over 10 years. The name is also symbolic of ‘the song of life’, a place where people can retreat, reflect and recharge, experience connection to nature, each other and spirit.

In 2024 the business passed to Paul McCann, who is developing the original vision further, honoring the literary, musical and creative history of the house and planting dreams for the future.
